Preserving Farmland for Tomorrow, Today

November 2024

Our vision for the future is clear – To grow our impact by conserving even more of Yolo County’s most precious resource—farmland.

Today, we’re excited to kick off our year-end fundraising campaign! Our goal is to raise $40,000 to protect the farmland that sustains us all.

The holiday season is a time of gratitude, gatherings, and traditions. For many, it’s a season to savor the bounty of the land and the dedication of our local farmers.

However, for those who steward this land, the challenges are ever-present — from rising costs to the constant pressures of development. By supporting farmland conservation, you’re helping preserve Yolo County’s agricultural heritage and ensuring that local farms can continue to nourish our community for generations to come.

As we reflect on the past year, we are reminded of our enduring commitment to conserving farmland in Yolo County, ensuring that future generations will continue to have food, open space, wildlife habitat, and a strong agricultural heritage. Thanks to your support, this year we were able to:

  • Partner with the Gill family, a multi-generational farming family, to protect their 120-acre almond orchard in Davis, expanding a continuous stretch of conserved farmland that will remain part of our region forever. This orchard not only produces almonds but also serves as critical habitat for local wildlife and greenspace between Woodland and Davis.
  • Celebrate the 35th anniversary of our beloved “A Day in the Country” event, which brings together local chefs, farmers, and supporters to enjoy the finest food grown on Yolo County farmland while supporting our mission.
  • Collaborate with farmers to advance soil health practices that boost farming productivity and environmental health.
  • Complete our Strategic Plan with input from key stakeholders, mapping out the next phase of our work to conserve even more farmland in Yolo County.

Yet, even as we celebrate these milestones, we face a stark reality: the rate of farmland loss to non-agricultural uses is alarming. The California Department of Conservation reports that 811 acres of farmland are lost each year in Yolo County alone. The urgency to conserve more farmland has never been greater.

Now is the time to act to protect our farmland—let’s make it last.

Your gift of $100 or more directly supports our mission to preserve essential agricultural lands and empowers farming families, like the Gills, to sustain their legacy of farming.

DONATE NOW

Together, we can safeguard the farmland that produces food for the world, defines our agricultural heritage, preserves open spaces, and sustains vital wildlife habitats.

Your generosity fuels our mission and allows us to continue this important work.

We are deeply grateful for your support.

Let’s protect Yolo County’s farmland — today and always. Thank you!

Sincerely,

John Currey, Executive Director
